Questions for 'Dexter', 'True Blood'

Both in the beginning stages of their respective seasons, Showtime's 'Dexter' and HBO's 'True Blood' share a common denominator in their developing plots: both are strewing up some pressing questions for their story lines, and some hypothetical scenarios I'll share as personal theories for what may be to come.

Last night's "Every Silver Lining" episode of 'Dexter' brings us closer to the end.
Now that we know Dr. Vogel was the originator of Dexter's "code", her role in this final season is significantly magnified. Her role also sets up a couple of questions I have as we delve deeper into the beginning of the end for Dexter Morgan; Vogel's beliefs about psychopaths (and Dexter) is fascinatingly positive and could be highly implicative of how this all plays out. Meanwhile, Deb is suffering worse than ever. We even saw her in the gloomy, red-filtered shot that has been used so often for Dexter as the serial killer (when she sat in the car and made eye contact with Quinn). Deb's instability and Dr. Vogel's presence will carry us through a dramatic season, but here are some questions/theories I've developed since last night's episode:
  • What is Dr. Vogel's end game? - Her belief is that Dexter is "perfect" and his serial killing ways are purely justified, but there were also two distinct moments from last night's episode when she seemed shocked to identify minimal forms of empathy within Dexter, compromising his psychopathic nature. Perhaps, in the end, Dr. Vogel has a more prominent diagnosis, allowing Dexter to combat his inner cravings to kill?
  • What happens to Deb? - Down the darkest path of her life, the old innocent Debra Morgan died with Maria LaGuerta. Now plagued by another death on her hands (El Sapo), recovery seems fully out of the question. So, does Deb follow through with her death wish and force Dexter's hand to put her on his table? Does he end up having to teach her "the code" in order to supplement her newly formed inner darkness?
  • Who is Dr. Vogel's mystery killer? - Consistent with the ensuing "empathy" theme, this season's mystery murderer is not only removing the empathic portions of his victim's brains, he's a former patient of Vogel's. Does this killer have some revealing relation with Dexter? I suspect so, similar in theory to the eventual reveal of "The Ice Truck Killer" as Dexter's brother in season one.

We came face-to-face with Warlow in last night's "At Last" episode.
War is brewing in Bon Temps. The big reveal from last night's episode was first learning that fae Ben is also fae/vampire Ben, AND happens to be Warlow, the villain we've anticipated since last season. The perplexing reveal definitely raises more questions in the midst of the most chaotic season of 'True Blood' thus far. Meanwhile, Nora and Pam were taken by the LAVTF, Eric has turned the vampire-hating Governor Burrell's daughter into that which he despises, and Bill(ith) continues his savior-esque attempts at preventing the extinction of vampirism. Finally, a dismal development with Andy Bellefleur's fae daughters, and Sookie's uncovering/threatening of Warlow just before the credits, leaving me to ask these questions after last night's episode:

  • Who is Warlow, really? - Don't I remember a Warlow with a top hat, long hair, and beard? In fact...
... Yeah, so what's this guy's deal? Alter ego? Maybe being half-fae-half-vampire has it's cosmetic effects when he goes in full vampire mode? He did say the light and dark inside him is in constant flux. I'll need some clarity.
  • Who is dying next? - Going the 'Game of Thrones' route, we're definitely in for more deaths than just Luna from the premiere. Will Pam, Nora, or anyone else suffer the fate at "The Camp" that Bill envisioned? Speaking of which, did Jessica really kill Andy's fae daughters? If so, does Andy join the uprising against vampires?
  • What will Bill's role be? - As prodigy of Lilith and supposed vampire god, my working theory is that Bill will have to be a bit more active than just synthesizing mass fairy blood for vampires to sustain on. I'm looking for 'Billith' to put those fancy powers to use. This is war!
  • Warlow-Billith match up? - Nora claims Warlow is the true progeny of Lilith, and the only person that can kill Bill. Future show down?
Fellow 'Dexter' and 'True Blood' fans, comment and share your thoughts, opinions, and what you think we'll see from either of these shows.
